General Skilled Migration (GSM) Visas

Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is meticulously designed to attract highly skilled individuals to address the nation’s workforce needs. The GSM stream is points-tested and encompasses several critical subclasses, notably Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional – Provisional), Subclass 191 (Permanent Residence – Skilled Regional), and Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent).

Points System for GSM Visas

To qualify for most GSM visas, candidates must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect and achieve the minimum points threshold, currently set at 65 points (refer to the Department of Home Affairs website for updates). Points are awarded based on the following criteria:

Age

Highest points allocated to applicants aged between 25 and 32 years.

English Language Proficiency

Points increase with higher proficiency levels, with ‘Proficient’ and ‘Superior’ English scoring the most.

Skilled Employment Experience

Recognises relevant employment both in Australia and overseas.

Educational Qualifications

Additional points awarded for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral qualifications.

Australian Study Requirement

Points for completing eligible studies in Australia.

Other Factors

Additional consideration for partner’s skills, state/territory nomination, study in regional Australia, completion of a professional year, and recognised community language skills.
